How to increase your tire life

How to increase your tire life: Tires are quite an expensive investment especially you need 4 of them for your vehicle. Knowing how to utilize them over its life span would definitely help you save a few extra bucks along the way. Instead of tackling the problem head on, we will invert the question and ask:

How to reduce your tire life span?

  • Do not rotate your tires
-As the wear rate of the tire is much higher in your driven axle (most likely front), you will naturally need to replace your driven axle tires way faster than the non driven axle. Rotating would help you balance out the wear. We have previously written a post about rotation explaining the fundamentals.
  • Drive really fast past any pot holes
-The tire is usually the weakest at the sidewall area. Driving though a pot hole while at high speed would subject the sidewall to a very high load which would mostly end up in a puncture.
  • Do not maintain or check your tire inflation pressure.
-An under inflated tire would lead to bad wear performance, a higher rolling resistance & bad handling characteristic. Check out our detailed post about tire pressure here.
  • Drive over big obstacles at high speed
-Similar to the pot holes, driving over obstacles would hurt your tires as the sidewall is being force to flex and absorb a much higher forces.

Summary

Sometimes driving through pot holes or obstacles can not be avoided but you could definitely slow down to reduce the damage. There is however no excuse for you not to rotate the tires & not maintaining a proper tire inflation pressure. As long you avoid doing the points as mentioned above, you will be duly on your way in extracting the maximum value out of the tire you have just purchased.
