Exceptionally quiet and comfortable all rounder [SUV] : Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV (2018)

Being an American brand, Goodyear essentially breathes SUV’s as this segment has been steadily on the rise for the last couple of year in the US. From the marketing material, Goodyear promotes a “Exceptionally quiet and comfortable, designed to fit luxury highway SUVs with reinforced & robust construction to match all driving conditions.“. Sounds like a tire with great focus on noise and comfort. Let’s check out its performances in the press test done by emao.com .

1. Wet braking.

Driving in wet conditions.

With the saying “safety first”, wet braking is certainly the go to test to evaluate a tire’s performance. The Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV came in 2nd in the test with a braking distance of 44.5m from 80-0 km/h. It only lag behind the wet braking king (Michelin Primacy SUV) by an extra 0.7m distance.

2. Wet handling

With its 2nd place performance in wet braking, it is not surprising that Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV came in 2nd from the wet handling test. It lost out to Michelin Primacy SUV by 0.5 seconds in lap time.

3. Aquaplaning

Outsmarting its nearest competitor (Michelin Primacy SUV) in wet, the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV managed to snatch 3rd with a speed of 80.5 km/h @15% tire slip. From the top premium competitors, Goodyear was the strongest in this category.

4. Dry braking

With a good performance in wet categories, can Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV perform in the dry ? Unlike its closest competitor (Michelin Primacy SUV), the tire actually fair quite well placing 3rd with only a 1m deficit to the top performer UC6 SUV.

5. Rolling resistance

The real weakness of this tire comes in rolling resistance as it finished last in the pack. The target conflict of wet/dry braking vs rolling resistance seems to be clear in this case.

6. Comfort

Designed for those who always wants the best, the EfficientGrip Performance SUV Tire is designed to achieve a more comfortable ride. It’s QuietTred Technology reduces exterior and interior noise levels to provide luxury SUV drivers with a quieter ride.

Goodyear’s FlexContact technology uses heavier gauge under tread and barrier cushion that reduces vibration and increases tire insulation for improved ride comfort.

With such bold statement as above, certainly the tire would excel in the comfort test right? Coming good with its promise, the Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV came in 2nd on the comfort ranking. It notched a 6.9 rating and only loosing to the Cotinental UC6 SUV which scored a 7.2 !

How about the interior noise? This is for people who likes it queit in the car without music 🙂 . Goodyear came up on top with the lowest noise level of 58.2 decibel. It certainly makes the interior car much quieter. Thumbs up for that.

7. Cost

A 225/65 R17 Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV cost RM 439 which makes this slightly cheaper than the Michelin Primacy SUV (RM445). For the latest update on all Goodyear EfficientGrip SUV prices, please visit our table or app.
