As announced late last year of 2020, Michelin launched a dedicated tire line focus on the electric mobility trend called Michelin e.Primacy . This does not come as a surprise as you can see how the market has been reacting to electric vehicles. Especially Tesla which has sold over 235,000 electric cars in the 2020 America market. With this explosive growth, the tires have to catch up and who else but the technology leader Michelin to introduce a electric focus tire line.

The e.Primacy comes with a EU rolling resistance label A and with a wet label B. With an eye of extending the coverage you can cover per charging cycle, rolling resistance label A fits to the expectation. In comparison with its predecessor, the rolling resistance was definitely an upgrade. However the wet label was down to B compare to A of the Primacy 4. There is clearly a tradeoff here on the maximum safety you can offer while having good rolling resistance. The e.Primacy noise was also slightly worse, picking up a deficit of 1 dB in comparison with Primacy 4.
Also interesting to take note, based on the rolling resistance testing results initiated by Michelin, the e.Primacy both at 2mm & new are the best in class. They beat Michelin Primacy 4 (RR: C), Bridgestone Turanza (RR: B), Continental Ecocontact 6 (RR: A), Continental Premium Contact 6 (RR: C), Dunlop Bluresponse (RR: B), Goodyear Efficient Grip 2 (RR: B) and Pirelli Cinturato P7 (RR: C). Only Continental Ecocontact 6 is label A but I do believe that the Ecocontact 6 is not a touring specific tire line.
Another big theme for e.Primacy is the sustainability topic. Based on their efforts, the e.Primacy is claimed to be the first carbon neutral tyre. According to Michelin’s website, they have been reducing its CO2 emissions by 25% since 2010 and aims to hit carbon neutral by 2050. As the defector leader in the tire industry, Michelin is the first to boldly state this claim and I would expect others to follow suit soon.
With the best in class rolling resistance and good wet braking performance, e.Primacy is definitely a tire to consider not only for electric vehicle owners but also for standard users. We will be keeping an eye for any test results coming out in the summer & hopefully will be able to provide a much more detail look into its performance.
