A new challenger in the touring segment : Michelin Primacy 4 vs Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2

Michelin Primacy 4 vs Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2

Michelin Primacy 4 vs Goodyear EfficientGrip Performance 2: Goodyear’s EfficientGrip Performance 2 was launch in 2020 and had big bold claims of having 50% more mileage than its predecessor and 20% more mileage than the next competitor in the TÜV test. It also advertise that it has shorter braking on wet and dry roads than all tested competitors. Let’s see whether its claims are valid and how would it fair against the current undisputed best touring tire the Michelin Primacy 4.

Press test

We will use the results from the recently concluded Test World 2021: Large Summer Tire Test R16 and provide a head to head comparison. 14 tires were tested in the in the test world proving ground. The graph below shows the comparison between Primacy 4 vs EfficientGrip Performance 2 based on the relevant performance category. The Primacy 4 was set as a reference hence at the 100% mark. Note that for subjective comfort evaluation, we equate 1 point as 5%. Hence for example if the tire A is graded 8 while tire B is graded 7, A is better than B by 5%. The natural scaling does not really make sense in evaluation whereby the max number is 10.

Wet

Primacy 4 has a clear advantage when it comes to wet braking. It is 2.9% better than EfficientGrip Performance 2. This is definitely surprising as the results claim by Goodyear having the best wet braking tire was not successfully repeated. While both the tires were rated equal in wet handling the Primacy 4 again show good aquaplaning performance dominating the EfficientGrip Performance 2

EfficientGrip Performance 2 :

  • – 2.9% in wet braking
  • Same in wet handling
  • -3.7% in aquaplaning

Dry

When it comes to braking, Primacy 4 dominates also in dry by braking 2.9% shorter than EfficientGrip Performance 2. They were both rated equally when it comes to dry handling.

EfficientGrip Performance 2 :

  • -2.9% in dry braking
  • Same in dry handling

Rolling Resistance

As rolling resistance is one of main performance in the EU label , the label gives a good indication how well the tires will perform in test. EfficientGrip Performance 2 has a label “B” while Primacy 4 has a label “C” hence it is clear that EfficientGrip Performance 2 will perform better. However it was surprising to see Goodyear being only 1% better compared to the Primacy 4.

EfficientGrip Performance 2 :

  • +1% in rolling resistance

Noise

Both tires were equally matched when it comes to comfort

EfficientGrip Performance 2 :

  • Same in comfort

Price

Tire size: 205/55R16

Primacy 4: € 65.80

EfficientGrip Performance 2 : 58.35

Difference: -13% cheaper for EfficientGrip Performance 2 .

Summary

Goodyear’s EfficientGrip Performance 2 bold claim of being the best premium dry/wet braking tire was found not to be true. It lacks the Primacy 4 both in dry & wet braking. It is however slightly better in rolling resistance and also 13% cheaper in comparison to Primacy 4. From a pure performance stand point, Michelin’s Primacy 4 is the winner here !
