Continental Sport Contact 7 vs Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6: Fresh from winning the tyre reviews 2022 UUHP test and Sport Auto’s 2022: UHP summer tire test 235/35 R19, Sport Contact 7 truly demonstrates clear competency with its superior wet & dry braking performances. On the other hand, Goodyear’s Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 has been also quietly picking up top honors in the UHP segment by winning the 2022 Tyre Reviews 17 Inch Summer Tyre Test & 2022 AMS Performance Summer Tyre Test. Now the moment of truth as we will put these two tires head to head and see who will be the champions of champions. The Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was released in 2022 while the Sport Contact 7 was released the year before.

Results

Results below were taken from the 2022 AutoBild 19 Inch Summer UHP Tyre Test. A total of 10 tires were tested on the Continental track in Germany. The graph below shows the comparison between Continental Sport Contact 7 vs Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 based on the relevant performance category. The Sport Contact 7 was set as a reference hence at the 100% mark.

For handling performances, the evaluation was done on the average speed rather than the preferred lap times or subjective rating. The tire size of interest is a 245/40 R19 which is a common tire size for high end sporty cars such as BMW 530I M Sport & Volkswagen Arteon 2.0 Tsi R-Line. Wet

Safety has always been the main theme when it comes to the need for wet performances. We saw previously how well the Sport Contact 7 performed against its competitors in wet braking and was totally surprised that the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 managed to out brake it by 0.8m . The better wet braking performances was somehow translated into wet handling as the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 managed to clock an average speed of 75.1 km/h compared to the 72.9 km/h obtained by Sport Contact 7. There were no clear advantages distinguishable in the wet circle performance category.

Things took a big turn when it came to aquaplaning as Sport Contact 7 had a slip speed advantage of +1.7 km/h. The advantage was more in curved aquaplaning as Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 achieved a lateral acceleration of 2.59 m/s2 while Sport Contact 7 had a 2.74 m/s2. Overall the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 is strong in wet grip and the Sport Contact 7 has a better optimized water channeling system.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6:

  • +1.5% in wet braking
  • +3% in wet handling
  • +0.2% in wet circle
  • -1.8% in straight aquaplaning
  • -5.5% in curved aquaplaning

Dry

One of the most important performances when it comes to the ultra ultra high performance segment is to have a very strong dry showing. Things were close in dry braking as Sport Contact 7 managed to out brake the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 by only 0.3m. Both tires were highly competitive in dry braking as they were ranked 1st and 2nd in the test.

Similar to dry braking, both tires also had a strong showing in dry handling as they are placed in the top 3 standings. Sport Contact 7 achieved an average speed of 119.4 km/h while Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 had an average speed of 117.8 km/h. Based on the test driver notes, the Sport Contact 7 is clearly a beast in dry handling with precise steering and outstanding grip.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6:

  • -0.9% in dry braking
  • -1.3% in dry handling

Noise

When it comes to noise, the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was 1 dB quieter compared to the Sport Contact 7. Both tires are nonetheless labeled at 70 dB rating.

Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6:

  • +1.4% in exterior noise (-1 dB)

Rolling Resistance

When it comes to extreme sporty tires, rolling resistance is definitely not something the user has in mind when purchasing the tire. However with the sustainability topic being more prevalent, it is good to know where they stand. Both tires were labeled “C” but the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was the best tire in the test with a rolling resistance coefficient of 7.86 N/kN. Sport Contact 7 only managed 3rd spot with a coefficient value of 8.48 N/kN.

  • +7.9% in rolling resistance

Price

Both tires were priced in the similar region with the Eagle F1 Super Sport just slightly cheaper than the Sport Contact 7 by 1.

Difference: -0.6% more cheaper for Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6.

Summary

With both companies bringing out their latest technology into the market, we had a very close fight. Sport Contact 7 excelled in aquaplaning & dry performances while the Eagle F1 Asymmetric 6 was good in wet grip, noise & rolling resistance. Overall from our point of view the results are too close to call out a winner in this case. The final choice would depend on your preference on having best in wet or best in dry.
