Results

Ideally, we would prefer a 1-on-1 test to clearly show the performance difference. However, since there are no direct testing results available, we must rely on the press release provided by Continental. Please note that these results come from the manufacturer, so we should approach them with some skepticism. Stay tuned for independent testing during the upcoming 2023 summer season!

The graph above shows the comparison between Continental CrossContact LX2 vs Continental CrossContact H/T based on the relevant performance category.

Mileage

Mileage is a crucial factor for highway terrain tires, and Continental focused on this during development. This effort paid off, as the new CrossContact H/T boasts a +20% increase in mileage. Generally, a 5-10% improvement is considered successful, but Continental went the extra mile by achieving 20%! This increase in mileage was made possible by a cutting-edge rubber compound featuring a unique composition and a specially developed polymer network for high mileage and cut resistance. Additionally, the compound’s high resilience helps prevent tread damage caused by stones.

CrossContact H/T :

  • +20% in mileage.

Noise

In addition to the mileage improvement, the new CrossContact H/T also features a significant noise reduction, with approximately 10% lower interior and exterior noise levels. This was achieved through optimized pitch sequencing in the new tread pattern, ultimately leading to enhanced comfort for the end-users

  • +10% in interior noise.
  • +10% in exterior noise.

Wet Braking

Although mileage and noise saw significant improvements, the CrossContact H/T maintained the same wet braking performance as indicated by its EU label classification. Both the CrossContact H/T and its predecessor received a “C” rating, demonstrating consistency in this particular aspect.

EU label:

  • CrossContact H/T: “C
  • CrossContact LX2: C

Rolling Resistance

Although mileage is crucial in the highway terrain category, rolling resistance may not always be the primary focus, as engineers often grapple with other pressing design challenges. However, as sustainability becomes increasingly important, rolling resistance has emerged as a valuable marketing aspect, reflected in label values. When it comes to rolling resistance, both tires share similar EU label classifications, with both receiving “C/D” ratings.

  • CrossContact H/T: “C/D
  • CrossContact LX2: C/D”

Winter Certification:

M+S vs 3 peak mountain
M+S vs 3 peak mountain

3 peak mountain

  • CrossContact H/T: No
  • CrossContact LX2: No

M+S

  • CrossContact H/T: Yes
  • CrossContact LX2: Yes

In 2013, before the 3-peak mountain all-season tire became popular in Europe, the LX2 was classified as a premium touring all-season tire. However, as European all-season tires with the 3-peak mountain logo gained dominance, this led to confusion. As a result, it makes sense for Continental to categorize the CrossContact LX2’s successor as a highway terrain tire, which only carries the M+S logo. Unlike the 3-peak mountain classification, the M+S logo does not require tires to pass a snow traction threshold as defined by regulations. Therefore, it’s reasonable to expect that a 3-peak mountain tire would outperform an M+S tire in snowy conditions.
