Bridgestone Ecopia HL001 vs Michelin Primacy SUV: Recently Bridgestone has launch a new SUV focus product in Malaysia called Ecopia HL 001. This product was previously launch in Australia & Korea in 2019. So this is not a totally new tire. Ecopia is Bridgestone’s fuel efficient tire line, naturally the product was assumed to have a good rolling resistance while having a balance performances in the wet & dry. The key focus area of this tire as mentioned in the fact sheet were

ECOPIA H/L 001 tyres are specifically designed for SUV drivers who desire a balance between safety, long wear life and fuel efficiency. This reflects the craftsmanship of Bridgestone in developing high performing eco-tyres customized for drivers who “want it all”.

Using the Korean labels of the same product, let’s compare the key wet braking and fuel efficiency performances against the current best SUV tire –>Michelin Primacy SUV.

Wet Braking

The Ecopia HL001 is able to match the Primacy SUV’s wet label ranking as both of them ranked “C”. As mentioned it the brochure, the Ecopia HL 001 made 12% improvement compare to its predecessor Ecopia 850 with its chamfering technique (see below)

Rolling Resistance

Michelin Primacy SUV : C

Being touted as a fuel efficient tire line, you would expect at least a label “C” for Ecopia HL001. However it was only label “D” while Primacy SUV manage one class higher with label “C”. Based on the spider diagram below, there were no gains at all in the rolling resistance category in comparison to its predecessor.

Summary

With the current information, the Primacy SUV has a slight advantage over the HL001 as it has a higher rolling resistance class.

Notes: I was unable to find out HL001’s UTQG and price hence unable to provide the usual comparison in this category. I will update this post once I get hold of it.
