Results: Giti Control P10 vs Continental UltraContact UC7

Results below were taken from our own 2023 Top Tire Review APAC Touring Tire Test with a total of 6 tires tested. The graph below shows the comparison between Giti Control P10 vs Continental UltraContact UC7 based on the relevant performance category. The Giti Control P10 was set as a reference hence at the 100% mark.

For handling performances, the evaluation was done on the subjective evaluation and lap times. Note that for subjective evaluations, we consider 1 point to be equivalent to 10%. This means that if tire A receives a rating of 7 and tire B receives a rating of 8, tire B is deemed 10% better than tire A. For noise tests, an increase of 1 dB corresponds to a 10% change in rating. This reflects the logarithmic nature of decibel measurements. We centered our tire test on the BMW F30 equipped with brand-new 225/45 R18 tires, amidst the tropical setting of West Java, Indonesia, with temperatures ranging between 28-35°C.

Wet

When comparing the wet performance of the Giti Control P10 and the Continental UltraContact UC7, it’s clear that the Giti Control P10 emerges as the ultimate victor in wet braking. The Giti Control P10 demonstrates superior wet braking capabilities, stopping at 17.91 meters, which is noticeably shorter than the 18.84 meters required by the Continental UltraContact UC7. This difference of nearly a meter is significant in terms of safety and efficiency.

In terms of subjective wet handling, both tires are on an even keel, each scoring a solid 7.5 out of 10. However, when we shift to objective measures like lap times, the Giti Control P10 again takes the lead. It completes laps in 26.1 seconds, outperforming the Continental UltraContact UC7, which trails with a time of 27.7 seconds. This faster lap time by the Giti Control P10 underlines its superior grip and handling in wet conditions.

Aquaplaning, a critical safety aspect, is the only area where the Continental UltraContact UC7 slightly edges out, with a slipping speed of 77.53 km/h compared to the 76.74 km/h of the Giti Control P10. Despite this, the overall performance in wet conditions clearly establishes the Giti Control P10 as the superior tire, making it the ultimate wet braking champion in the APAC touring market.

UltraContact UC7 :

  • -4.9% in wet braking
  • 0% in wet handling (subj)
  • -6.1% in wet handling (lap time)
  • +1% in aquaplaning

Dry

In dry conditions, the performance of the Giti Control P10 and the Continental UltraContact UC7 is closely matched, with each tire exhibiting its own strengths. Starting with dry braking, the distance is almost identical, with the Giti Control P10 stopping at 36.12 meters and the Continental UltraContact UC7 at a marginally shorter 36.07 meters. This minuscule difference of 0.05 meters suggests that both tires are highly competent in dry braking.

When considering subjective dry handling, the Continental UltraContact UC7 slightly surpasses the Giti Control P10, scoring 7.4 out of 10 compared to 7.3 out of 10 for the P10. This indicates a marginally better perceived performance in handling for the UC7.

However, a more noticeable difference is seen in objective dry handling, measured by lap times. Here, the Continental UltraContact UC7 takes a clear lead, completing laps in 26.9 seconds, whereas the Giti Control P10 trails with a lap time of 28.3 seconds. This faster lap time by the Continental tire reflects its superior handling and agility in dry conditions.

Overall, while both tires demonstrate high performance in dry conditions, the Continental UltraContact UC7 slightly edges out the Giti Control P10, particularly in handling and lap time performance.

UltraContact UC7 :

  • +0.1% in dry braking
  • +0.6% in dry handling (subj)
  • +4.9% in dry handling (lap time)

NVH (Noise Vibration & Harshness)

When examining the NVH (Noise, Vibration, and Harshness) performance of the Giti Control P10 and the Continental UltraContact UC7, both tires showcase their unique strengths and slight differences in comfort and noise levels.

Starting with pass-by noise, the Giti Control P10 exhibits a slightly lower noise level at 70.4 decibels, compared to the Continental UltraContact UC7 which is marginally louder at 70.7 decibels. This small difference indicates that the Giti Control P10 is a bit quieter from an external perspective.

In terms of interior noise at the front, the roles reverse. The Continental UltraContact UC7 presents a lower noise level inside the vehicle, measuring at 71.7 decibels, whereas the Giti Control P10 is slightly noisier at 72.7 decibels. This suggests better interior noise insulation for the Continental tire.

Subjective comfort is a close call, with the Giti Control P10 scoring 7.15 out of 10, just narrowly surpassing the Continental UltraContact UC7, which scores 7.05 out of 10. This indicates a slightly higher level of perceived comfort for the Giti Control P10.

However, when it comes to subjective noise, the Continental UltraContact UC7 takes a small lead, scoring 7.25 out of 10, compared to the Giti Control P10’s 7.15 out of 10. This suggests that users might perceive the Continental tire as slightly quieter.

In summary, while both tires perform well in NVH aspects, the Giti Control P10 is slightly better in terms of pass-by noise and subjective comfort, whereas the Continental UltraContact UC7 excels in interior noise and subjective noise perception.

UltraContact UC7 :

  • -3% in pass by noise (+0.3 dB)
  • +9.3% in interior noise (-0.9 dB)
  • -1% in subjective comfort
  • +1% in subjective noise

Rolling Resistance

When comparing the rolling resistance (RR) performances of the Giti Control P10 and the Continental UltraContact UC7, there’s a notable, albeit slight, difference. The Giti Control P10 has a rolling resistance coefficient of 8.6 N/KN, while the Continental UltraContact UC7 is slightly more efficient with a coefficient of 8.3 N/KN. This difference, though small, can be significant over time.

Rolling resistance is particularly important in the context of electric vehicles (EVs). Lower rolling resistance translates to less energy required to keep the tire rolling, which directly impacts the battery range of an EV. Tires with lower rolling resistance, like the Continental UltraContact UC7 in this comparison, can contribute to an increased driving range per charge, making them more efficient and environmentally friendly.

Therefore, while both tires perform well, the Continental UltraContact UC7, with its marginally lower rolling resistance coefficient, may be a more suitable choice for EV owners who prioritize maximizing their vehicle’s battery range. This slight edge in efficiency can make a noticeable difference in the long-term performance and sustainability of electric vehicles.
